A liquor-laden car crashed on a National Highway in Patna on Friday, after which passersby, motorists and truck drivers were allegedly seen picking up bottles scattered across the road, with a video of the incident going viral on social media.
The incident occurred on the highway at Lodipur under Khusrupur police station. The car, allegedly transporting a consignment of Indian-Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL), crashed, causing liquor bottles to spill onto the road.
As the bottles became visible, a crowd gathered at the spot. Viral footage purportedly shows pedestrians, truck drivers and motorists stopping to collect the bottles, with some allegedly fleeing with them. Others were seen approaching the damaged vehicle and picking up bottles.
In one portion of the footage, liquor bottles can reportedly be seen being collected near an e-rickshaw carrying schoolchildren.
The incident has attracted attention as Bihar has a prohibition law in place and has also triggered discussion on alleged liquor smuggling and the conduct of people who took advantage of the accident.
An official said the damaged vehicle bears registration number BR 01 FL 8170. The suspected liquor smuggler allegedly fled the scene after the crash.
Following information about the incident, Khusrupur police reached the spot and seized the damaged vehicle. An FIR has been registered against an unidentified person suspected of liquor smuggling, and an investigation is underway to identify and arrest the accused.
Police are also investigating the source of the liquor consignment and its intended destination. The vehicle remains in police custody as efforts continue to trace the suspected smuggler.
The incident has also raised questions over enforcement of Bihar’s prohibition policy and public conduct after the liquor bottles were allegedly taken away from the accident site.
