The Calcutta High Court on Friday granted interim protection from coercive police action, including arrest, to Trinamool Congress General Secretary and Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee in three more FIRs registered against him.
The order, passed by a single-judge Bench of Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya, takes the number of FIRs in which Banerjee has secured interim protection to eight out of a total of 16 cases registered against him at different police stations in West Bengal.
Of the three cases covered by Friday’s order, two were registered at Bishnupur Police Station and one at Rabindra Nagar Police Station. Both police stations fall under the Diamond Harbour Police District in South 24 Parganas.
The cases relate to alleged large-scale irregularities at the free Sebashray health camps conducted by Banerjee during the previous Trinamool Congress regime.
Justice Bhattacharyya has granted Banerjee protection until September 11. The next hearing in the three cases is scheduled for September 7. The remaining eight FIRs in which the Diamond Harbour MP has not yet secured interim protection will be heard on August 25.
Banerjee, who is also the nephew of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has alleged that the FIRs were politically motivated. He has claimed that following the change of government after the Assembly elections earlier this year, the new BJP government has targeted him out of political vendetta and that the cases against him are baseless.
The complainants, however, have accused Banerjee of misusing his authority during the previous government. They have claimed that they were unable to lodge police complaints against him when the Trinamool Congress was in power, but were able to approach the police after the change in government, leading to the registration of multiple FIRs.
