India’s para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar dedicated his bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026 to years of struggle and perseverance, saying his journey from driving an e-rickshaw and selling vegetables to standing on the podium was driven by an unwavering belief in his dream.
After winning bronze in the men’s heavyweight para powerlifting event on Friday, an emotional Jhandu said he had endured financial hardships but never lost sight of his goal.
“I drove an e-rickshaw, sold vegetables and struggled a lot to support myself. But I never gave up on my dream. I always had faith that one day I would definitely win a medal for my country,” he told IANS.
Jhandu topped Group B with a best lift of 130.9, finishing ahead of Uganda’s Dennis Mbaziira (114.1) and Australia’s Ben Wright (110.9) to stay in medal contention.
In the overall standings, Nigeria’s Riluwan Idris secured the gold medal with a lift of 132.8, while England’s Matthew Harding claimed silver with 131.0. Jhandu’s effort of 130.9 earned him the bronze, leaving him just 0.1 short of silver.
The medal marks a significant milestone in Jhandu’s career, reflecting years of sacrifice and determination despite financial challenges. His achievement also boosts India’s medal tally at the Glasgow Games and stands as an inspiring example of resilience and dedication.
Jhandu said the medal belongs to everyone who supported him through difficult times and added that the success has strengthened his resolve to pursue even greater achievements in the future.
