Karnataka BJP President B.Y. Vijayendra on Saturday urged Director General and Inspector General of Police M.A. Saleem to withdraw FIRs registered against party workers in connection with the submission of Form-7 applications, alleging that the cases were filed under pressure from the state government.
Vijayendra led a BJP delegation that met the DG-IGP and raised concerns over the cases registered against party workers. Former Chief Minister and BJP Central Parliamentary Committee member B.S. Yediyurappa, Leader of Opposition in the Assembly R. Ashoka, Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, former Deputy Chief Minister C.N. Ashwath Narayan, several BJP MLAs and MP P.C. Mohan were among those present.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Vijayendra said Form-7 was a legal provision under Election Commission rules that allows citizens to raise objections to entries in electoral rolls.
“Any person can submit Form-7 if there are ineligible or irregular names in the electoral roll. The Election Commission examines the application and takes action if the objection is found valid. If the objection is not justified, it is rejected. This is a normal part of the electoral process,” he said.
Vijayendra alleged that the state government was using the police to register cases against BJP workers for exercising this provision. He further alleged that the FIRs were filed after the Chief Minister and ministers protested before the Election Commission and subsequently put pressure on the police.
“We will not remain silent. Protecting our workers is our responsibility, and we are ready to go to any extent to defend them. The cases registered unjustly against our workers must be withdrawn. Otherwise, we will be forced to launch protests, including outside police stations,” he said.
Reacting to Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar’s statements regarding the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT), Vijayendra said holding power did not give the government the right to use the police system at its discretion.
He accused the Chief Minister of attempting to interfere with the functioning of the police department and demanded that political interference be avoided.
“Power is not anyone’s family property. The misuse of power should be stopped,” Vijayendra said.
He warned that the BJP would launch a statewide agitation if the state government continued with what he described as its current approach.
Vijayendra reiterated the demand for withdrawal of the FIRs against BJP workers and called for the police department to function without political interference.
