Continuous heavy rainfall since Saturday night has disrupted normal life in Mumbai and neighbouring areas, with widespread waterlogging causing difficulties for commuters, motorists and pedestrians.
The eastern side of Nalasopara Railway Station has been severely waterlogged following the persistent downpour. Passengers were seen wading through accumulated water to reach their destinations, while large crowds gathered inside the station premises amid the rain.
Several roads in Vasai-Virar, particularly around Centre Park and Tulinj Bridge in Nalasopara, were also inundated during the morning, making movement difficult for motorists and pedestrians.
Mumbai’s Dadar area continued to receive heavy rainfall, adding to commuters’ woes. Railway tracks at Kurla station were also flooded following the prolonged downpour, affecting movement in and around the station.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar for Sunday. The weather agency has forecast thunderstorms with lightning, light to moderate rain and strong winds reaching 40-50 kmph at some places.
The IMD said the sky would generally remain cloudy, with occasional moderate rain or thundershowers, while isolated areas could receive heavy rainfall.
Mumbai is likely to receive further rainfall on Monday, with moderate rain forecast for the city.
The weather conditions come on the first day of the Ganesh festival, while idol immersion processions are scheduled to begin on Tuesday. The IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall in Mumbai on the day of the immersion processions as well.
