Ferozepur, August 23, 2026 (Vikram Ditya Sharma)
Two residents of Ferozepur were allegedly duped of a combined Rs 2.5 lakh in separate cyber fraud incidents reported on the same day, with fraudsters using a fake police case and bogus bank reward points to deceive the victims.
In the first case, Kulbir Singh of Bazidpur village in the Kulg arhi block approached police after allegedly losing Rs 1 lakh to a caller who claimed to be a police official.
According to his complaint, Kulbir received a call from an unknown number a few days ago. The caller allegedly claimed that his brother had been arrested after a video surfaced showing him carrying a weapon and demanded Rs 5.5 lakh for his release.
Believing the caller, Kulbir transferred Rs 1 lakh and assured him that the remaining amount would be paid later. He subsequently contacted his brother and discovered that he was safe and had not been arrested.
Police registered FIR No. 15 at the Cyber Crime Police Station under Sections 308, 319(2) and 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Sections 66-C and 66-D of the Information Technology Act.
In the second case, city resident Anil Kumar allegedly lost Rs 1.5 lakh after receiving a call from a person posing as an Axis Bank employee. The caller allegedly told him that reward points were available on his credit card and sent him a link to claim them.
After Kumar entered his details through the link, Rs 1.5 lakh was allegedly withdrawn from his bank account. Police registered FIR No. 16 at the City Police Station under Sections 66-C and 66-D of the IT Act.
SSP Bhupinder Singh said both cases were under investigation and police teams were working to identify and trace the accused.
He urged residents to exercise caution while dealing with unknown callers and advised them against clicking suspicious links or sharing OTPs, passwords, card details or other banking information with strangers.
