India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant was forced to retire hurt after suffering a painful blow to his left wrist from a short delivery by Sri Lanka pacer Lahiru Kumara on the opening day of the second Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club on Sunday.
The injury occurred during the 58th over of India’s innings when Kumara, operating from around the wicket, bowled a sharp bouncer that followed Pant into his body. Pant attempted a pull shot but was struck on the left wrist and immediately appeared to be in considerable discomfort.
The ball rolled towards the leg side as Pant remained down on the ground. India’s team physio Kamlesh Jain attended to him with an ice pack, while play was halted for an extended period.
After assessment and brief treatment, Pant attempted to continue but the pain persisted. He eventually walked off after scoring three runs from 15 deliveries.
Ravindra Jadeja replaced Pant at No. 6 and joined Devdutt Padikkal in the middle. The Indian team management is yet to confirm the extent of Pant’s injury or whether he will return to bat later in the innings.
Pant subsequently received further attention from team doctor Charles Minz in the dressing-room area.
The setback comes after Pant had also retired hurt during an India A match last year before returning to score a half-century.
India entered the Colombo Test leading the series after a 165-run victory over Sri Lanka in the opening match in Galle.
