A 29-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly fleeing the scene of a hit-and-run that left a pedestrian critically injured in Sydney’s northwest on Sunday afternoon, New South Wales (NSW) Police said.
Emergency services were called to Ferndale Avenue near Edinburgh Avenue in Carlingford, about 22 km northwest of Sydney’s central business district, around 12.30 p.m. after reports that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle.
Police said a van had hit a 34-year-old man before the driver allegedly fled the scene on foot. The pedestrian was trapped underneath the vehicle and had to be freed by emergency responders before NSW Ambulance paramedics treated him at the scene. He was later taken to hospital in critical condition.
Following a search of nearby bushland, officers arrested the alleged driver and took him to a police station. Police have established a crime scene and launched an investigation into the circumstances of the crash.
The incident comes amid a series of serious road crashes elsewhere in Australia.
On August 19, three people were killed in separate traffic collisions in Queensland within a six-hour period, while another person was hospitalised with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Queensland Police Service said a 27-year-old man died after his vehicle left the road and struck a tree in Brisbane’s southern suburbs around 7.35 p.m.
Earlier that day, a 63-year-old woman was killed in a three-vehicle crash in Wamuran, about 50 km north of Brisbane. Police said she was standing outside a parked vehicle when she and the vehicles were struck by another car.
In a separate crash in Armstrong Creek, a 72-year-old woman died after her vehicle collided head-on with a utility. The utility’s 54-year-old driver was taken to a Brisbane hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said investigations into the Queensland crashes were continuing.
