Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for greater collaboration among Indian space startups and other sectors to establish India as a global hub for space technology, saying the world should now be looking towards Indian companies whenever breakthroughs emerge in the sector.
Modi made the remarks during an interaction with the CEOs and founders of 20 Indian space startups at Seva Teerth on Friday. A video of the interaction was released on Sunday.
The startups represented a broad range of technologies, including rockets and reusable semi-cryogenic launch vehicles, avionics, satellites, advanced propulsion systems, space and defence intelligence, space debris removal, and artificial intelligence-based hyperlocal weather and climate intelligence.
Addressing the founders, Modi thanked them for placing their confidence in the government’s commitment to the private space sector.
“The biggest thing is that you placed your trust in the word of the government. It has always been my view that whatever decision we take, we must remain consistent in it, so that even if someone wants to take a risk they do that without fear,” he said.
The Prime Minister said Indian startups should reach a stage where international attention naturally turns towards them.
“The world must now be searching for Indian startups, wondering, ‘Who are the players in this?’ Because whenever a breakthrough occurs, people’s attention turns to it immediately,” Modi said.
He called for creating an ecosystem capable of attracting global talent to India and encouraging Indians working overseas to return.
“I firmly believe that because of you all, we can pull the entire global talent pool like a magnet,” he said.
Modi also highlighted India’s cost competitiveness and talent pool, saying the country’s willingness to take risks could help it establish a strong position in the global space industry.
The startup founders highlighted the rapid growth of India’s private space sector and their efforts to develop indigenous technologies. They also credited government support and the opening of the space sector to private participation with creating new opportunities for industry.
Modi urged companies to look beyond conventional applications and develop technologies that directly improve people’s lives. He suggested partnerships between space-debris companies and environmental organisations, while recommending that space technology firms working in agriculture collaborate with agricultural universities and government departments to help farmers make better-informed decisions and improve productivity.
