Gujarat: Over 10,000 Women to Send Rakhis, Postcards to PM Modi Ahead of Raksha Bandhan

Gandhinagar, August 21, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

More than 10,000 women associated with the BJP Mahila Morcha and other organisations in Gujarat will send rakhis and postcards to Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of Raksha Bandhan, state BJP Mahila Morcha president Anju Vekaria said on Friday.

Addressing a press conference at the BJP state headquarters, Vekaria said the rakhis would symbolise a “thread of protection”, while the postcards would convey the women’s affection, trust and emotional bond with the Prime Minister. Raksha Bandhan will be celebrated on August 28 this year.

Vekaria said women from Gujarat have been sending rakhis and postcards to Modi every year, wishing him good health, a long life and continued strength to serve the national interest.

She highlighted what she described as various measures taken during Modi’s tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister and Prime Minister to promote women’s safety, dignity, empowerment and participation in governance.

Among the initiatives she cited were Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana and Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao. She said these programmes addressed issues including access to clean cooking fuel, sanitation, housing ownership, savings for girls, education and welfare.

Vekaria also referred to Sakhi Mandals and self-help groups, saying they had connected lakhs of women with self-employment and income opportunities. She said the Lakhpati Didi initiative seeks to strengthen women’s economic independence, while Namo Drone Didi is creating opportunities for rural women to work with modern technology and emerging businesses.

On political representation, Vekaria pointed to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, passed by Parliament in 2023, which provides for 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state Legislative Assemblies, subject to the conditions for its implementation.

She also claimed that Opposition parties had prevented the passage of a recently introduced Bill that, according to her, would have enabled women to benefit from 33 per cent representation in the Lok Sabha from the 2029 general election.

“Congress only talks about empowering women and does not genuinely want to make women partners in building the country’s future,” she alleged.

Vekaria said Modi believed women, who comprise half of India’s population, should have an equal role in national policymaking.
