The Aadhaar app has crossed the 5-crore download milestone, reflecting the growing use of digital Aadhaar services among residents, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said on Thursday.
The app serves as a digital interface between Aadhaar holders and the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), allowing users to access several services through their smartphones without visiting an Aadhaar centre.
These include mobile number, address and email updates, biometric lock and unlock facilities, and e-Aadhaar downloads.
According to the ministry, more than 60 lakh mobile number updates have been carried out through the app, along with over 15 lakh address updates and more than 23 lakh email updates.
The growing use of these facilities indicates an increasing preference for accessing Aadhaar-related services digitally, the ministry said.
The app has been designed around the “Show, Share and Verify” principle, giving Aadhaar holders greater control over the information they share while facilitating identity verification.
Meanwhile, UIDAI has expanded its offline verification ecosystem, onboarding more than 200 entities as Offline Verification Seeking Entities (OVSEs) since the mechanism was rolled out in January.
The offline verification framework enables secure, consent-based and paperless identity verification without requiring real-time access to UIDAI’s central database.
Using mechanisms such as QR code-based verification and secure digitally signed documents, participating entities can verify identity details while Aadhaar holders can limit the information shared to only what is necessary.
The ministry said the initiatives are aimed at strengthening privacy-focused digital verification and improving ease of access to public services in line with the government’s Digital India vision.
