A Selection Grade Constable of the Jammu and Kashmir Police has been dismissed from service for his alleged involvement in a narcotics smuggling case in Kathua district, with the department reiterating its zero-tolerance policy against drug-related offences.
According to a police statement, Kathua Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mohita Sharma ordered the dismissal of Selection Grade Constable Aftab Ahmed, a resident of Reasi district, following the completion of departmental proceedings connected to a case registered under various provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at Billawar Police Station earlier this year.
Police said the constable was apprehended during a checking operation and was allegedly found in possession of heroin. Following his arrest, he was placed under suspension with immediate effect on April 8 on charges of grave misconduct and indiscipline.
A departmental inquiry was subsequently initiated and entrusted to the Superintendent of Police (Operations). The inquiry report, submitted on July 27, confirmed the charges against the constable and recommended his dismissal from service.
Acting under Rule 335 of the Jammu and Kashmir Police Rules, the Kathua SSP ordered his immediate dismissal, stating that the action was intended to uphold institutional discipline and serve as a deterrent against involvement in narcotics-related offences within the police force.
Police noted that similar action has been taken against personnel involved in drug trafficking in the past. In Udhampur district, a constable was previously dismissed after being arrested with heroin under the NDPS Act.
The statement also referred to the Jammu and Kashmir administration’s 2024 action under Article 311, under which five police constables were terminated for alleged involvement in narcotics activities. In 2022, five Special Police Officers (SPOs) were arrested in Kupwara and Baramulla districts in connection with an alleged cross-border drug smuggling network operating near the Line of Control. In another case, SPO Javed Ahmed was disengaged and arrested in Doda district in 2023 after allegedly being found in possession of illegal cannabis.
