Music composer Amaal Mallik has described ‘Yeh Awarapan’, the latest track from the upcoming Emraan Hashmi-starrer Awarapan 2, as a heartfelt tribute to two of the most memorable songs from the original film — Toh Phir Aao and Tera Mera Rishta.
Speaking to IANS during the film’s promotional event at Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Mallik said he approached the composition by staying true to the emotional essence of Emraan Hashmi’s character while giving it a contemporary touch.
“I created ‘Yeh Awarapan’ with the character of Awarapan in mind. I watched the original film several times in theatres and later revisited it on television and streaming platforms. The music reflects that emotional connection while also adapting it to the new story,” he said.
Mallik added that the new composition honours the legacy of Toh Phir Aao and Tera Mera Rishta, songs that have continued to define the film’s identity over the past two decades.
“These songs have kept the character alive for 20 years. I hope I can carry that legacy forward. In ‘Yeh Awarapan’, there is a meeting of the old Shivam and the new Shivam. It blends the spirit of Awarapan with Awarapan 2 while retaining an emotional familiarity,” he said.
The composer noted that although the melody is simple, the emotions conveyed through the song are profound and relatable.
“The story is deep and reflects different phases of life. Many people have experienced their own version of Awarapan, beyond the film itself, which is why I believe they will connect with this song,” he added.
Released in 2007, Awarapan gradually attained cult status despite its modest box-office performance, thanks to its emotionally driven narrative, memorable soundtrack and Emraan Hashmi’s acclaimed performance. Directed by Mohit Suri, the film found a devoted audience through repeated television broadcasts and digital streaming.
Awarapan 2 is scheduled to hit theatres on August 14, 2026.
