Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi arrived in Chennai on Saturday for the concluding session of a leadership training camp organised for Tamil Nadu Congress district presidents near Mamallapuram, where the focus is expected to be on strengthening the party’s organisational structure and expanding its grassroots presence across the state.
Rahul Gandhi, who flew in from New Delhi, was welcomed at Chennai airport by senior Congress leaders and party workers. Among those present to receive him were Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president Manickam Tagore, Minister P. Viswanathan and other senior functionaries.
From the airport, Gandhi travelled to Mamallapuram, where the Tamil Nadu Congress has been conducting a training programme for its district-level leadership since July 23. The camp has brought together 74 District Congress Committee presidents for discussions on organisational development and political strategy.
According to party sources, Gandhi will hold a closed-door interaction with the district presidents, during which he is expected to emphasise strengthening the Congress at the booth and district levels while preparing the organisation for future political challenges in the state.
The meeting comes at a significant time for the party as it seeks to consolidate its organisational base after returning to power-sharing in Tamil Nadu as part of the ruling alliance, its first such role in the state in nearly six decades.
Rahul Gandhi is also expected to meet family members of the participating district presidents. Senior state leaders, including Ministers S. Rajesh Kumar and P. Viswanathan, are scheduled to attend various sessions of the programme.
Later in the day, Gandhi will hold a separate meeting with key party office-bearers to review the Congress’ organisational position and discuss its future strategy in Tamil Nadu.
Party leaders are also making arrangements for Gandhi to meet the parents of four students from Coimbatore and Salem who died in incidents linked to the NEET examination.
He is expected to return to Chennai after completing his engagements and fly back to New Delhi on Saturday evening.
