The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday carried out searches at 12 locations in Kolkata linked to former Trinamool Congress legislator and ex-Mayor of Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation Sabyasachi Dutta, who is currently under arrest in an alleged extortion and corruption case.
The raids are believed to be connected to the recent recovery of around 3.5 kg of gold from Dutta’s residence and a bank locker registered in his name. Investigators also recovered gold purchase documents showing transactions worth approximately Rs 76 crore, according to sources.
The agency is examining whether the seized gold was acquired through proceeds allegedly generated from corruption and extortion, charges that form part of the ongoing probe against Dutta.
Gold consignments were also recovered from the residence of Trinamool Congress leader Tina Bhowmik, who was considered close to Dutta during the previous Trinamool Congress government.
Before the ED action, the state police had frozen five bank accounts belonging to Dutta and his wife Indrani Dutta. Police officials said around Rs 3.70 crore was found in bank accounts, fixed deposits and cash holdings.
Dutta was arrested by the state police on June 9 following a prolonged interrogation after a businessman from Salt Lake filed a complaint alleging extortion. Investigators later claimed that additional complaints related to corruption and alleged intimidation had surfaced during the probe.
Dutta served as a Trinamool Congress MLA from the Rajarhat-New Town Assembly constituency between 2011 and 2021. He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections but later returned to the Trinamool Congress after the party retained power in the state.
He contested the recent Assembly election from the Barasat constituency but was defeated.
