In a significant breakthrough in its ongoing crackdown on narcotics trafficking, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have arrested an alleged habitual drug peddler from Mumbai and executed a preventive detention order against him under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act, 1988.
According to an official police statement, the accused, identified as Asif Khan, son of Mohd Younas and a resident of Bufliaz village in Surankote tehsil of Poonch district, had been placed under preventive detention following repeated allegations of involvement in drug trafficking activities.
The detention order was issued by the Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, after authorities concluded that the accused had been consistently involved in the illicit narcotics trade and posed a serious threat to public health and social order. Police said he allegedly targeted local youth, particularly vulnerable individuals, drawing them into drug abuse and trafficking.
Following the issuance of the detention order, the accused allegedly fled Jammu and Kashmir and took shelter in Mumbai in an attempt to evade arrest. Acting on specific intelligence inputs, Poonch Police formed a special team, which travelled to Mumbai and, in coordination with the local police, traced and apprehended him after sustained surveillance and technical investigation.
The accused was subsequently brought back to Jammu and Kashmir after completing the required legal procedures. Police said the detention order under the PIT-NDPS Act has now been executed, and he has been lodged in District Jail Dhangri.
The police described the operation as an example of effective inter-state coordination and reaffirmed their commitment to dismantling narcotics networks operating in the region. They also appealed to the public, educational institutions and civil society to assist anti-drug efforts by sharing credible information about drug-related activities, assuring that the identity of informants would remain confidential.
The statement added that Poonch Police will continue to pursue a zero-tolerance policy against drug traffickers and take strict legal action against those involved in the illegal narcotics trade.
