The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has apprehended two proclaimed offenders in separate bank fraud cases after they allegedly evaded court proceedings for several years, the agency said in a statement on Tuesday.
The accused have been identified as Jitendra Kumar and Pooja Pahwa, who had been on the run for 17 years and four years, respectively.
Jitendra Kumar is accused of obtaining a home loan during 2002-03 on the basis of fake and forged salary certificates, causing an alleged loss of Rs 65.90 lakh to GIC Housing Finance Limited. The loan account was declared a non-performing asset (NPA) immediately after the loan was disbursed.
Following complaints, a chargesheet was filed in 2006 against Kumar and 18 others. He allegedly failed to appear before the court from 2009 onwards and was declared a proclaimed offender in 2013.
The CBI said sustained efforts to trace him led to his apprehension from Dwarka Mor in Delhi on August 25. He will be produced before the competent court for further proceedings in accordance with law.
In the second case, Pooja Pahwa was allegedly involved in the diversion and misappropriation of a cash credit facility obtained using false and forged documents. The alleged fraud caused a loss of Rs 10.16 crore to Indian Overseas Bank.
The account was declared NPA in 2012, and Pahwa was chargesheeted along with five others in 2017. A supplementary chargesheet was subsequently filed against four bank officials for allegedly conspiring with the beneficiary company and individuals.
According to the CBI, Pahwa deliberately evaded trial proceedings and did not appear before the court from 2022. She was declared a proclaimed offender in 2023.
The agency said sustained intelligence gathering led to her apprehension earlier this month from Ludhiana in Punjab. She is currently in judicial custody.
