India wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson has revealed that he chose to step away from external expectations and focus on playing cricket according to his own instincts before the 2026 T20 World Cup, saying he no longer wants to be part of the constant race for recognition.
Samson, who played a key role in India retaining the Men’s T20 World Cup title earlier this year with three consecutive half-centuries, said he has reached a stage in his career where he wants to enjoy the game, contribute to the team and trust his own judgement.
“I realised that there is a constant rat race in our country, and I decided before the 2026 T20 World Cup that I would not be part of it. I just want to enjoy the game. By God’s grace, I have achieved a lot. I am 31 now, and I have a few years left,” Samson said on JioStar’s show ‘Believe’.
“No one will tell me how to bat or what to do. Sanju will decide for Sanju,” he added.
Samson said he never expected to be part of the 2026 World Cup squad after losing his place at one stage and believes future opportunities will depend on his performance and the team’s requirements.
Reflecting on his growth as a cricketer, Samson recalled an interaction with former India captain Virat Kohli during a team camp, where Kohli stressed the importance of maintaining discipline and a professional lifestyle.
Samson said Kohli’s approach towards fitness and recovery influenced him, though he admitted that maintaining the same level of discipline over a long period was challenging.
The Kerala-born batter also spoke about his mindset before the T20 World Cup semi-final against England, when he faced questions about his previous struggles against fast bowler Jofra Archer. Samson said he remained confident in his preparation and did not allow past records to affect his approach.
Recalling the final against New Zealand in Ahmedabad, Samson said he embraced the responsibility of being a major contributor with the bat and focused on staying at the crease rather than reacting under pressure.
He also praised his teammates, including Ishan Kishan and Jasprit Bumrah, for their contributions to India’s title-winning campaign, saying every player played a role in the historic victory.
