In a significant political development following the Ludhiana West by-election debacle, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has formally accepted the resignations of three senior Punjab Congress leaders—Bharat Bhushan Ashu, Pargat Singh, and Kushaldeep Singh Kikki Dhillon.
The resignations were submitted in the aftermath of the party’s defeat in the high-stakes bypoll. Bharat Bhushan Ashu, who contested the election and was serving as the Acting President of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC), stepped down, taking moral responsibility. Supporting him in accountability, both Pargat Singh and Kikki Dhillon, who were holding the positions of Vice Presidents in the Punjab Congress, also tendered their resignations.
Informing about acceptance of the resignations, Punjab Congress in-charge Bhupesh Baghel said “The Party expresses its gratitude for the services of all three leaders in their respective roles and wishes them a bright future.”
The by-election episode once again highlighted the internal rifts within the Punjab Congress. Discord became evident as soon as Ashu was announced as party’s candidate. PPCC President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring and Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa were excluded from Ashu’s campaign strategy, leading to visible cracks in coordination.
In a telling incident during the early days of campaigning, Raja Warring attempted to meet Ashu, but the meeting never took place, reportedly due to Ashu’s lack of response, exposing the strained relations between the two senior leaders.
This series of events is being viewed as a major setback for the Congress in Punjab, raising questions about leadership unity and electoral strategy ahead of the upcoming political battles.
