Music composer Amaal Mallik says he does not dwell excessively on a song’s failure, having realised that several factors beyond the composer can determine how a track connects with listeners.
Mallik, who composed ‘Yeh Awarapan’ for the recently released Emraan Hashmi-starrer ‘Awarapan 2’, spoke to IANS during the film’s promotions in Mumbai’s BKC area.
Asked whether he tends to overthink when a song fails to resonate with audiences, Mallik said he has learned to take a step back and assess the situation rather than overanalyse it.
“No, because I have realised that there are bigger factors than me in running a song. When my music video comes on my face, and if it doesn’t work, then I get into an understanding that maybe I will think more, or I need to fix something,” he said.
The composer said he usually takes some time to reflect on whether he has experimented with a sound that audiences may not yet be ready to embrace.
“I take 10-15 days and think that maybe I have done something new, something experimental. Maybe people don’t want to listen to it or maybe it was a song ahead of its time,” he told IANS.
Mallik cited his song ‘Sooraj Dooba Hain’ as an example of how musical trends can change over time.
“So many times in my career, when I did ‘Sooraj Dooba Hain’, it had the same electronic soundscape. But it didn’t work then, two years later the genre became big. Times keep changing,” he said.
He added that the rapidly changing music landscape means a song’s initial performance does not necessarily determine its long-term impact.
“Every two weeks, a new song can come, which can become bigger than a film song,” Mallik said.
The composer has previously spoken about making peace with songs that fail to make an impact upon release but gain popularity years later.
‘Awarapan 2’, a sequel to the 2007 film ‘Awarapan’, sees Emraan Hashmi reprise his role as Shivam Pandit. While the original film did not perform well commercially when released, it developed a strong following over the years and attained cult status, particularly for its music and Hashmi’s performance.
‘Awarapan 2’ is currently running in cinemas.
