A 21-year-old woman who sustained injuries during the July 20 protest at Jantar Mantar was discharged from Dr Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital on Thursday after making a satisfactory recovery following 10 days of intensive medical treatment.
In a medical update, the hospital said the woman had been admitted in an unconscious condition after suffering asphyxia during a stampede-like situation that occurred amid the march towards Parliament. Her condition was critical at the time of admission, requiring immediate resuscitation, intensive care and ventilatory support.
According to the hospital, the patient was initially treated in the Emergency Department before being shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where she remained on ventilatory support. Following sustained clinical improvement, she was successfully weaned off the ventilator and, after spending a week in the ICU, was moved to the Nursing Home ward for further recovery and rehabilitation.
On the 10th day of her hospitalisation, doctors found her to be fully conscious, alert, coherent and haemodynamically stable. She had resumed a normal oral diet and was able to walk independently and carry out her routine daily activities without assistance.
“In view of her satisfactory clinical recovery and stable condition, she is being discharged today with appropriate medical advice and follow-up instructions,” the hospital said.
The woman was among those who participated in the ‘Sansad Chalo’ protest held at Jantar Mantar on July 20 to demand accountability over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination and other recruitment and entrance examinations.
According to the report, the demonstration later turned violent after some miscreants allegedly resorted to stone-pelting, following which security personnel used force to disperse the crowd. The clashes resulted in injuries to several protesters as well as police personnel.
