Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) has arrested a private person for allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹7,200 from a transporter in a trap operation conducted as part of its ongoing campaign against corruption.
The accused has been identified as Baj Kumar, a resident of Kotkapura in Faridkot district. According to an official spokesperson of the VB, the arrest was made on the basis of a complaint filed by a transporter involved in supplying sand, gravel, soil and stone to different districts of Punjab.
The complainant alleged that last month, when employees of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) office had set up a checking point at Bughipura Chowk, his truck was stopped. Baj Kumar allegedly introduced himself as a special person associated with the RTA and told the transporter that he would have to pay a monthly amount per vehicle to avoid challans in the Ferozepur zone.
The accused allegedly demanded ₹1,200 per vehicle per month and asked the complainant to meet him at the RTA office in Ferozepur. When the complainant did not visit for a few days, Baj Kumar allegedly contacted him through WhatsApp and repeated the demand.
The complainant, unwilling to pay the alleged illegal gratification, approached the Vigilance Bureau Flying Squad-1 in SAS Nagar. Acting on the complaint, the VB laid a trap and caught Baj Kumar red-handed while accepting ₹7,200 in the presence of two official witnesses.
The VB spokesperson said relevant persons are being questioned during the investigation. If the involvement of any government official or employee comes to light, appropriate legal action will be initiated.
A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against the accused at the Vigilance Bureau Police Station, SAS Nagar. Further investigation is underway.
