Panthic Delegation Urges Punjab Governor to Expedite Hawara’s Parole, Decide Rajoana’s Mercy Plea

Chandigarh, July 28, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

A delegation representing various Panthic organizations met Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria on Monday, seeking early parole for Jathedar Jagtar Singh Hawara and an expeditious decision on the pending mercy petition of Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana.

According to a press statement issued by Shiromani Akali Dal Punar Surjit, senior party leader and Core Committee member Prof. Prem Singh Chandumajra said the delegation also resubmitted a ten-point Charter of Demands concerning what it described as Punjab’s legitimate issues.

Prof. Chandumajra said the delegation informed the Governor that the village panchayat of Hawara, along with 152 other village panchayats, had passed formal resolutions supporting parole for Jathedar Hawara to enable him to visit his ailing mother. The resolutions, he said, were submitted to the Governor along with a request for early consideration of the parole application.

He further stated that Panthic organizations had assured the authorities of their cooperation and responsibility during Hawara’s release on parole.

Referring to the cases of Hawara and Rajoana, Prof. Chandumajra claimed that both Sikh prisoners had remained incarcerated beyond the period he described as their due sentence, alleging that the continued detention amounted to a violation of human rights.

He also asserted that parole is a legal entitlement available to prisoners and alleged that Sikh inmates have been denied this right in a discriminatory manner. In the same context, he cited the example of the Dera Sacha Sauda chief, alleging that despite being convicted in rape cases, he had been granted parole on multiple occasions.

Besides raising the two key issues, the delegation reiterated its ten-point Charter of Demands, which had earlier been submitted through Deputy Commissioners and subsequently presented to the Governor last month. The delegation urged the government to take prompt action on the pending demands.

According to the statement, Governor Kataria assured the delegation that all the issues raised would be considered sympathetically and expeditiously.

The delegation comprised Prof. Prem Singh Chandumajra, Parminder Singh Dhindsa, Gaganjeet Singh Barnala, Baba Hardeep Singh, Karnail Singh Panjoli, Advocate Simranjit Singh Chandumajra, Hardev Singh Harpalpura, Mahinderjit Singh Gharori, Sarabjit Singh Billa and Simranjit Singh Billa, among other Panthic leaders.
