Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) working president and MP Supriya Sule on Friday said her faction would continue its legal battle in the Supreme Court over the party’s identity, describing the dispute with the Ajit Pawar faction as a question of organisational principles and morality.
Sule said that although the Ajit Pawar faction received recognition from the Election Commission, she maintained that the party built by Sharad Pawar rightfully belonged to him. She termed the removal of the party from its founder and its allocation to another group as a major injustice.
“This is about the principle that the party belongs to the person who built it,” Sule said, adding that what Sharad Pawar ultimately decides to do with the organisation would be his decision along with those involved in its organisational process. She stressed that the issue was not about treating a political organisation as anyone’s private property.
Reacting to Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan’s remarks on the Delimitation Bill and his advice against aligning with “Manusmritivadis”, Sule said Maharashtra Congress leaders repeatedly place the NCP (SP) in a different political category from the one recognised by the party’s central leadership. She said she remained in regular touch with senior Congress leaders.
On Rahul Gandhi’s proposed visit to Pune, Sule questioned the restrictions imposed on the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. She said Gandhi was scheduled to attend a Congress-organised programme and interact with students through democratic means, asking why stringent conditions were necessary.
Sule also said political leaders from across the country regularly meet Sharad Pawar, who, she claimed, gives people time despite political differences.
She alleged that Opposition MPs face discrimination in the allocation of development funds and recalled that governments led by her party had implemented development works even for Opposition representatives, sometimes at greater speed.
Sule also extended support to MP Bajrang Sonawane and warned against what she described as “dirty politics”, saying her party would not tolerate false cases against his family or party workers.
She further alleged that poor quality was evident in roads, education, ashram schools and anganwadis despite the allocation of substantial funds, and questioned the utilisation of government money, including in connection with food supplied to school students.
