Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Sunday paid rich tributes to the martyrs of the 1999 Kargil War, saying their unparalleled courage, patriotism and supreme sacrifice would continue to inspire generations to serve the nation with dedication and selflessness.
Marking Kargil Vijay Diwas, the Chief Minister laid a wreath at the War Memorial, paid floral tributes to the fallen soldiers, interacted with the families of martyrs and ex-servicemen, distributed five two-wheelers to differently abled ex-servicemen, and encouraged NCC cadets and trainees of the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Armed Forces Preparatory Institute and Mai Bhago Armed Forces Preparatory Institute, Mohali, to pursue careers in the armed forces.
Reaffirming the Punjab Government’s commitment to the welfare of soldiers and their families, Mann said those who sacrifice their lives for the nation belong not to one family alone but to the entire country. He said the freedom and security enjoyed by citizens are the result of the unmatched bravery and dedication of the armed forces.
Paying homage to the 527 soldiers who laid down their lives during the Kargil conflict, including 65 from Punjab, the Chief Minister said their sacrifice remains a matter of immense pride for the state and the nation. He noted that Punjab’s history is deeply rooted in courage and sacrifice, adding that societies which honour their heroes preserve their identity and values.
Recalling the spirit of national unity during the 1999 Kargil War, Mann said Kargil Vijay Diwas symbolises the extraordinary courage and determination displayed by India’s armed forces under the most challenging circumstances. He added that the sacrifices of the country’s soldiers could never be repaid.
Highlighting the state’s support for the armed forces, the Chief Minister said the Punjab Government provides financial assistance of ₹1 crore to the family of every soldier who attains martyrdom while serving the nation.
Addressing NCC cadets and aspiring defence personnel, Mann described service in the armed forces as one of the noblest professions and assured them of the Punjab Government’s full support in helping them realise their dream of serving the country.
Earlier, the Chief Minister observed a two-minute silence after laying a wreath at the War Memorial as the Last Post was sounded in honour of the martyrs. He also took the salute during a ceremonial Guard of Honour presented by the PAP Band under the leadership of PAP Group Commander DSP Davinder Singh Saini.
Defence Services Welfare Minister Mohinder Bhagat and senior armed forces officers were among those present on the occasion.
