Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor and choreographer Geeta Kapur revisited their early association with Yash Chopra’s iconic romantic musical Dil To Pagal Hai, recalling their first meeting and the demanding dance rehearsals that followed.
The conversation took place during an episode of Sony Entertainment Television’s India’s Best Dancer Season 5, which celebrates the theme ‘India Wala Dance’.
Geeta recalled meeting Karisma in 1996, when she was beginning her career as an assistant choreographer and was working on the choreography for the film’s song ‘Pyaar Kar’.
She remembered Karisma as an established star who treated her with warmth and respect. Geeta also recalled her first impression of the actress, who was dressed in a light blue gown during the shoot.
Karisma, in turn, remembered working with Geeta on stage shows and described her as a choreographer who pushed her to take on challenging dance movements rather than assigning her simpler steps.
Recalling one such instance, Karisma said the other performers were given relatively easy choreography, while she was handed what she described as a Michael Jackson-inspired step. She jokingly questioned Geeta about the difficulty, but the choreographer encouraged her, telling her that she could pull it off.
Karisma said the experience reflected the demanding but encouraging approach Geeta brought to their performances.
Released in 1997, Dil To Pagal Hai starred Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Karisma Kapoor and Akshay Kumar. The Yash Chopra-directed film revolves around Rahul, the director of a dance troupe, and his belief in finding his destined partner. His close friend and fellow dancer Nisha secretly loves him, while Pooja, an accomplished dancer who joins his production, gradually becomes central to his life.
The film’s music, composed by Uttam Singh with lyrics by Anand Bakshi, included popular tracks such as ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’, ‘Arre Re Arre’, ‘Bholi Si Surat’, ‘Dholna’, ‘Le Gayi’, ‘Pyaar Kar’ and ‘Koi Ladki Hai’.
‘Pyaar Kar’, sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Udit Narayan, remains one of the film’s memorable romantic numbers.
