Ludhiana, August 14, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
Punjab-born doctor Dr Rupinder Kaur has been honoured with the prestigious “Role Model Persons with Disability Award” for her professional commitment, social contribution and inspiring achievements despite being affected by polio.
A resident of Rajguru Nagar, Ludhiana, and a native of Daudhar village, Dr Kaur has been serving in Punjab’s Health Department for the past 17 years. She is currently working as an Ayurvedic Medical Officer under the National Health Mission, Punjab, and is presently posted at Government Hospital Jodhan in Ludhiana district.
Known for her dedication, integrity and compassion, Dr Kaur has earned recognition not only for her professional work but also for her creative abilities and commitment to serving people from economically weaker sections and underserved communities. She has reportedly examined nearly one lakh patients during her medical career.
One of her most notable achievements came in April 2026, when she became the first Indian polio-survivor wheelchair user to reach Everest Base Camp. The feat was accomplished through a programme organised by Tinkesh Ability Foundation and emerged as a significant achievement in the field of disability inclusion and adventure.
Her Everest Base Camp achievement also earned appreciation from the Ludhiana administration. The then Deputy Commissioner of Ludhiana had formally seen her off before the expedition and felicitated her after her successful return, encouraging her to pursue further goals.
Dr Kaur has previously received several honours, including the Best Performer Award, Directorate of Ayurveda Punjab’s Women Icon Award, Real Hero of India Award 2023 and REX Karmaveer Bronze Award 2025.
Adding another milestone to her journey, she received the “Role Model Persons with Disability Award” at the 17th NCPEDP–Mphasis Universal Design Awards ceremony in Delhi on August 14, a day before Independence Day.
Dr Kaur has consistently emphasised action and determination rather than allowing disability to define her abilities. She credits her parents for their support and remains committed to promoting awareness, dignity and empowerment among women and persons with disabilities.
Her father, Major Singh, a retired senior officer of Punjab National Bank, is also associated with social service as a member of the Gyan Pragasu Trust, Budhewal.
Dr Kaur’s professional journey and achievements have made her an inspiring example of determination, public service and inclusive empowerment in Punjab.
