Senior Congress leader Renuka Chowdhury on Wednesday sparked a political controversy with remarks alleging that temples are being built with the intention of facilitating the “loot” of donations and materials, while referring to the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.
Chowdhury made the remarks in an interview with IANS while responding to a question about the Special Investigation Team (SIT) report concerning alleged irregularities involving donations and materials associated with the Ram temple.
The Congress leader claimed that the outcome of the SIT report was expected and alleged that while action is taken against smaller individuals, influential people are protected.
Referring to reports about the recovery of fake silver in place of genuine silver, Chowdhury said: “We already knew that small individuals will be punished while big names will be saved.”
She then referred to a television serial about a bank robbery before making her controversial remark on temple construction.
“Today, all temples are being built so that we can loot, and they think Ram ji will stay there and nobody will ever know,” she said.
Chowdhury added that those allegedly involved should not assume that their actions would remain undiscovered.
“They forgot that Maryada Purushottam Ram cannot be played with. They will face the consequences,” she said.
Her remarks come amid a broader political dispute over the Ram temple and allegations of financial and material irregularities connected with temple-related activities. The allegations and Chowdhury’s claims remain part of the political discourse and should not be treated as established facts unless supported by official findings or judicial proceedings.
The Congress leader also criticised the BJP over the ongoing political controversy surrounding Vande Mataram, accusing the ruling party of using the issue to divert attention from public concerns.
On allegations involving Congress leader Sonia Gandhi and the National Song, Chowdhury dismissed them as politically motivated and said the Opposition was being blamed to deflect attention from the government’s alleged failures.
She said political parties should instead focus on issues affecting students and young people.
Defending Rahul Gandhi, Chowdhury said his actions were motivated by concern for the country and maintained that the people would ultimately decide the country’s political future.
