Bengal: Humayun Kabir appears before police over ‘controversial’ remarks case

Kolkata, July 4, 2026
Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) chief and Naoda MLA Humayun Kabir on Saturday appeared before the police in connection with a case over his recent controversial remarks.

Kabir appeared at Rejinagar police station in Murshidabad district before 11:30 am today. Before entering the police station, Humayun said, “If I am arrested, 100 to 120 more people will court arrest voluntarily; the list is ready.”

On June 26, Humayun Kabir delivered a provocative speech against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at an AJUP meeting in Rejinagar. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari himself warned him, saying he would teach him a ‘lesson’ in this incident.

After that, a complaint was filed against the AJUP leader at Rejinagar and Shaktipur police stations. The police summoned him to the police station for questioning in this incident. He has also been accused of threatening the Officer-in-Charge of Shaktipur police station. He was summoned to Shaktipur police station yesterday in that case. However, he did not appear. Today, Humayun appeared at Rejinagar police station.

After Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s warning, the police had already arrested three leaders of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party in the controversial remarks case. They were the organisers of the meeting in Rejinagar.

Humayun was summoned to Rejinagar police station for questioning in this case at 11:30 am today. He arrived three minutes early. It is learned that party workers have been gathering in front of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party office near Rejinagar police station since this morning. The police are flying drones outside Rejinagar police station to conduct surveillance.

It may be noted that within 24 hours of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s warning, the three organisers of Humayun Kabir’s ‘controversial’ meeting were arrested on June 29. The names of the arrested are Golam Mustafa, Mohammad Aminul Haque and Anisur Rahman.

The Murshidabad district police caught them in two separate operations. The operations were based on two FIRs registered in Rejinagar and Shaktipur police stations. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had warned of police ‘action’ in view of the controversial comments.(Agency)
