Hyderabad Police on Tuesday took trainee IPS officer M. Uday Krishna Reddy into custody in connection with allegations of sexual harassment made by a woman batchmate at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy.
Police shifted Reddy to the Attapur Police Station, where the case was registered on July 19 following the woman trainee officer’s complaint.
The police had earlier formed four teams to trace Reddy after he could not be found at the two addresses provided during the investigation. His mobile phone was also reportedly switched off. However, Reddy denied that he was absconding and said he had gone to his native village Ullapalem in Andhra Pradesh’s Prakasam district to visit his ailing grandmother.
Earlier in the day, Reddy told a media channel that he was returning to Hyderabad and would cooperate with the investigation. He maintained that the allegations against him were false and expressed confidence that he would prove his innocence.
The trainee officer had approached the Telangana High Court last week seeking quashing of the FIR, claiming that the case was registered on the basis of false allegations.
The 30-year-old complainant alleged that Reddy harassed her between June 23 and July 10 during their training at the police academy. She accused him of sending abusive messages, issuing threats, recording a private video and sharing it with her husband. She also alleged that he took her mobile phone, obtained its password and used personal messages to blackmail her.
Based on the complaint, Attapur Police registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including provisions related to sexual harassment, voyeurism, stalking, criminal intimidation, wrongful confinement and causing hurt. Charges under the Information Technology Act relating to privacy violation and transmission of sexually explicit material were also invoked.
Reddy had allegedly attempted suicide at a relative’s residence in Hyderabad on July 21 and was admitted to a private hospital. Medical examination later indicated an overdose of alcohol, while samples tested negative for poison and drugs.
In a purported handwritten note, Reddy claimed that he and the woman trainee officer were in a relationship and alleged that certain individuals were responsible for his decision. He denied accusations of coercion and claimed he had evidence to support his version that the relationship was consensual.
