Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated the Indian women’s cricket team on winning the Women’s Asia Cup, describing the triumph as a “proud moment for Indian cricket” and praising the team’s confidence, consistency and fighting spirit.
India defeated Sri Lanka by 72 runs in Sunday’s final to win the continental championship for a record-extending eighth time.
In a post on X, PM Modi said the team’s performance throughout the tournament could inspire young people across the country to take up sport.
“A proud moment for Indian cricket! Congratulations to the Women’s team on winning the Asia Cup. Their confidence, consistency and remarkable spirit were on full display throughout the tournament. May this triumph inspire millions of youngsters across the country to play more and shine,” he said.
India produced a dominant all-round performance in the final, avenging its 2024 defeat to Sri Lanka. The victory was also India’s sixth win over Sri Lanka in Asia Cup finals across the ODI and T20 formats, including the 5-0 result in the two-team 2004 tournament.
India posted 183/5 after Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana shared a record 129-run opening partnership. Shafali struck 68 off 39 balls and reached her half-century from just 24 deliveries, registering the fastest fifty in Women’s Asia Cup history. Mandhana scored 59 off 39 balls.
Sri Lanka mounted a fightback towards the end of India’s innings, with captain Harmanpreet Kaur dismissed for 14 and Richa Ghosh falling for 17. G Kamalini, playing her first match of the tournament, provided a late boost with a five-ball 15.
India’s bowlers then wrapped up the contest. Shree Charani claimed 4-20 and Deepti Sharma 3-19 as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 111. Chamari Athapaththu top-scored with 36, while Nilakshika Silva made 22.
India’s emphatic victory extended their dominance in the Women’s Asia Cup and added another major title to the team’s growing record.
