Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon on Monday led a delegation that met Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav and submitted a memorandum seeking adequate security and traffic arrangements for the party’s upcoming ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatras’.
The BJP will organise four awareness yatras from September 18 to 30 as part of its campaign to highlight the drug menace and seek public participation in making Punjab drug-free.
Dhillon said the yatras would begin from Sujanpur in Pathankot, Fatehgarh Sahib, Fazilka and Talwandi Sabo. BJP national president Nitin Nabin is scheduled to flag off the first yatra from Ekta Sthal in Sujanpur on September 18.
He said Union Ministers Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Arjun Ram Meghwal, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and other senior BJP leaders would participate at different stages of the yatras. A large number of BJP workers and members of the public are also expected to join the programmes.
The yatras will culminate in Jalandhar on September 30, where the party expects a large gathering.
Dhillon urged the police administration to ensure adequate security along the entire routes, including the starting and concluding points, and prevent anti-social or disruptive elements from interfering with the programmes.
He also called for traffic plans to be prepared in advance in coordination with district police officials to facilitate the smooth movement of the yatras while minimising inconvenience to commuters and residents.
Describing the campaign as more than a political programme, Dhillon said the ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra’ was intended to build a mass movement to protect the state’s youth and families from drug abuse.
He alleged that drug abuse had contributed to increasing crime, gang culture and extortion in Punjab and accused the Aam Aadmi Party government of failing to fulfil its promise of eliminating drugs within three months of coming to power.
Dhillon further alleged that drugs were now reaching homes across the state and accused the government of attempting to suppress voices criticising its handling of the issue.
