Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Monday warned gangsters, drug traffickers and other criminals operating from abroad that they cannot evade the law indefinitely, asserting that Punjab Police will pursue fugitives across borders and bring them back to face justice.
Mann was speaking after felicitating the Punjab Police team led by Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) SP Bikramjit Singh Brar for securing the extradition of fugitive criminal Amritpal Singh alias Amrit Dalam from Moldova.
The Chief Minister said the successful extradition demonstrated the effectiveness of the state government’s ‘Gangstran Te Vaar’ campaign and sent a clear message to criminals and their handlers operating from foreign soil.
“There is no safe haven for gangsters anymore. Whether they are hiding in Punjab, another part of India or thousands of kilometres away in Europe, the Punjab Police will track them down,” Mann said. “They may change their locations, passports and identities, but they cannot escape the law forever.”
According to Mann, 1,234 gangster modules have been busted and 10 fugitives have been deported from abroad. He said 60,582 FIRs had been registered against drug traffickers and properties worth Rs 366 crore seized. The state has also equipped police with high-tech anti-drone systems and formed Village Defence Committees involving around 1.5 lakh people.
Mann said Amrit Dalam, described as a key operative of the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang, was wanted in several serious cases, including murder, attempt to murder, offences under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and Arms Act, as well as narcotics-related offences.
He said the extradition was the result of coordinated efforts by the AGTF, Overseas Fugitive Tracking and Extradition Cell (OFTEC), Punjab Police and central agencies.
During a recent visit to Moldova, a Punjab Police delegation received a Token of Appreciation from the Moldovan government for cooperation that facilitated the first-ever extradition of a fugitive criminal from Moldova to India.
Calling the recognition a matter of pride for Punjab, Mann said it reflected growing international trust in the professional capabilities of the Punjab Police and stronger cooperation between Indian and Moldovan law-enforcement agencies.
He reiterated that the state government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards gangsters, extortionists, drug traffickers and organised criminal networks, regardless of their influence or connections.
