Uruguay’s Foreign Minister Mario Lubetkin has praised India’s leadership of BRICS and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s role in steering the grouping towards consensus on several sensitive geopolitical issues, saying the outcome of the summit demonstrated India’s growing influence in the Global South.
Describing the summit as an “incredible success”, Lubetkin said the adoption of a concrete, consensus-based New Delhi Declaration reflected India’s ability to bring together countries with divergent positions on ongoing conflicts.
“There were different protagonists involved in some of the ongoing wars and conflicts, but I think the Prime Minister and the Government of India, as the chair of the meeting, were able to facilitate the process and achieve consensus. That shows India as one of the key leaders at this moment, especially in the Global South,” Lubetkin said.
“We do not need to simply use words, we need to look at the results and understand what India achieved,” he added.
The Uruguayan Foreign Minister also credited Modi with successfully aligning diverse interests within BRICS, saying the fact that consensus was reached and announced at the end of the meetings demonstrated the Prime Minister’s stature among world leaders.
Lubetkin, who arrived in New Delhi last week, said his visit was also aimed at strengthening bilateral ties with India and advancing engagement between India and Mercosur.
During his stay, he held meetings with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal.
He said India and Uruguay were working on a roadmap to translate the long-term vision discussed by Modi and Uruguayan President Yamandu Orsi into concrete cooperation ahead of Orsi’s planned visit to India in October 2027.
Lubetkin identified three key tracks for expanding ties: bilateral cooperation in areas such as the economy, culture, audiovisual projects, sports and other sectors; advancing India-Mercosur trade negotiations; and strengthening engagement between India and CELAC, which brings together 33 Latin American and Caribbean countries.
Uruguay currently chairs both Mercosur and CELAC, providing an additional platform for deeper India-Latin America engagement.
Lubetkin said he expected India-Uruguay relations to gain further momentum, particularly in economic, cultural and people-to-people cooperation.
He also highlighted India’s decision to open its first-ever embassy in Uruguay, describing it as an important step in strengthening the partnership and expressing hope that Jaishankar would visit Uruguay in the coming months.
The two foreign ministers are also expected to meet later this month in New York, where discussions involving CELAC and India are likely to focus on deepening regional cooperation.
