The decision by the Indian women’s cricket team not to receive the Women’s Asia Cup trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President Mohsin Naqvi after winning the tournament in Dubai was taken following discussions, BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla said on Monday.
India defeated Sri Lanka by 72 runs at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday to clinch a record eighth Women’s Asia Cup title. However, Harmanpreet Kaur’s team chose not to collect the trophy from Naqvi, who is also Pakistan’s Interior Minister and chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
Shukla said the decision was deliberate and that there was no confrontation during the presentation.
“We discussed the trophy issue and decided not to take it from him. He didn’t object to it, and we told our team. They gave whatever they had and left. There was no quarrel, no fight, no clash,” he told reporters after returning from Dubai.
He also said interactions between officials from different countries during a cricket match should not automatically be viewed as political confrontation.
The development came amid continuing tensions between India and Pakistan and mirrored the stance taken by the Indian men’s team after winning the 2025 Asia Cup. The men’s team had also declined to receive the trophy from Naqvi, and India has yet to formally collect that trophy.
Shukla and BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia were seen speaking cordially with Naqvi in the Royal Box during the women’s final, with the visuals attracting considerable attention on social media.
Shukla expressed confidence that India’s women’s team would carry its winning momentum into the upcoming Asian Games in Aichi Prefecture, Japan.
“Our women have once again made us feel honoured. We will continue to win. Our team is going to Japan tomorrow, and we will win there as well,” he said, praising the team’s enthusiasm and confidence.
