Yemen’s Houthi group on Monday claimed to have launched dozens of ballistic missiles and drones at King Khalid Air Base in southwestern Saudi Arabia, in what it described as a major retaliatory operation amid escalating cross-border hostilities.
Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree, in a statement carried by the group’s Al-Masirah television channel, said the attack targeted fighter-jet hangars, radar systems, runways, ammunition depots and other military installations at the base in Khamis Mushait, near the Yemeni border.
Saree claimed the strikes were “precise and direct” and caused significant damage. There was no immediate response from Saudi authorities to the claims, and no independent information was available on possible casualties or damage.
The Houthi spokesperson said the operation was launched in retaliation for what the group described as an intensified Saudi air campaign in Yemen. He claimed Saudi F-15 and Typhoon fighter jets had carried out more than 300 airstrikes across several Yemeni provinces in recent days.
Saree warned that the Houthis would continue targeting locations deep inside Saudi territory as long as airstrikes against Yemen continued, adding that any further escalation would be met with broader military operations.
The claim comes amid a wider Houthi offensive that began on September 3 and has altered front lines along Yemen’s Red Sea coast. The group has claimed control of several areas previously held by government forces in Hodeidah province and neighbouring southwestern Taiz.
The Houthis also claimed to have captured the strategic port city of Mocha on Thursday before advancing towards the Bab al-Mandab Strait and seizing Mayun Island, located in the vital maritime passage linking the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden.
