An Indian-origin woman died after jumping onto a New York City subway track in an attempt to save a friend who had fallen onto the tracks, with both being struck by an approaching train, police said.
The incident took place early Sunday at a Manhattan subway station while the two friends were waiting for a train. Police identified the victims as Navam Kaul and Malaika Chitre.
According to authorities, Kaul fell onto the tracks, prompting Chitre to jump down in an attempt to help. The train operator told supervisors that there was insufficient time to stop the train after spotting the two people on the track, according to reports citing police sources.
The New York Police Department was investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident on Monday.
Kaul and Chitre, who grew up in neighbouring towns in New Jersey, graduated from Rutgers University in 2024.
Rajnikant Pipalia, who told the New York Post that his son was a friend of Kaul, said Kaul’s family had immigrated from Nepal. He described Kaul and Chitre as part of the same South Asian social circle who grew up together and shared festivals and community gatherings.
Chitre was pursuing a doctorate in pharmacy at Temple University and was also working as a quality operations specialist at Acadia Pharmaceuticals, according to her LinkedIn profile.
Kaul, who held a business degree, was working as a data analyst at Bloomberg, according to his LinkedIn profile.
Chitre’s family has criticised media coverage of the tragedy, objecting to what they described as sensational speculation and reports that lacked a factual basis.
The incident, which was captured on video, has drawn attention to the dangers of attempting to rescue someone from subway tracks while a train is approaching. The NYPD investigation into the circumstances of the deaths is continuing.
