Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday, a Varanasi-based weaver has created a unique artistic tribute portraying him receiving the blessings of his late mother, Heeraben Modi.
Weaver Sarvesh Kumar Srivastava crafted the portrait using pure Indian silk threads, depicting an emotional mother-son moment through the traditional artistic and weaving heritage of Kashi.
According to Srivastava, the artwork has been created using the traditional ‘Uchand Kala’, an ancient art form that is believed to have links to the era of Lord Ram. The intricate portrait took around one-and-a-half months to complete.
Srivastava is sending the artwork to Prime Minister Modi as a birthday gift. He has previously gifted Banarasi sarees to the Prime Minister on his birthdays.
Explaining the inspiration behind the creation, Srivastava said the portrait was intended as a tribute to Modi while also preserving the emotional bond between the Prime Minister and his mother through Varanasi’s traditional craftsmanship.
“Our Prime Minister is a great personality for India… The portrait of PM Modi’s mother giving blessings to him is a kind of work that can be framed and preserved,” Srivastava said.
The weaver expressed hope that the portrait would reach the Prime Minister and be preserved as a distinctive example of traditional Indian craftsmanship.
The creation also highlights the artistic legacy of Varanasi, where generations of artisans and weavers have preserved traditional techniques while incorporating contemporary themes into their work.
By portraying Modi and his mother in silk threads, Srivastava has combined a personal birthday tribute with Kashi’s centuries-old weaving tradition. The artwork is expected to be presented to the Prime Minister around his birthday, bringing together silk craftsmanship, traditional art and a deeply personal theme.
