A 24-year-old woman, identified as Jasmine Chahal, died after allegedly jumping from the 14th floor of a residential high-rise in Jalandhar on Monday afternoon. Police have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
Jasmine was the daughter of Karamvir Singh Chahal, a Punjab Police officer posted in Faridkot. Her mother, Gurpreet Kaur, is a government school teacher.
According to available information, Jasmine was residing with her mother at AGI Smart Homes. At around 3.30 pm, she reportedly went to the 14th floor of the adjoining Jalandhar Heights-2 residential complex and fell from the building. She sustained fatal injuries and died at the spot.
After being informed about the incident, a team from Sadar Police Station reached the scene and took the body into custody. It was subsequently shifted to the Civil Hospital, Jalandhar, for post-mortem examination.
Sub-Inspector Balkaran Singh said the exact circumstances surrounding the death were being investigated. Statements of family members were being recorded and further legal proceedings would be carried out on the basis of the facts emerging during the inquiry.
Police are also examining CCTV footage from the residential complex to reconstruct the sequence of events preceding the incident.
Reports indicated that a brief note was found in connection with the incident containing the words, “I was wrong. I am sorry.” Police, however, are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
Jasmine had an outstanding academic record. While studying at St Joseph’s Convent School, Jalandhar Cantonment, she secured the second position nationally in the ICSE Class X examination in 2018.
Her academic achievement had also been recognised by then Punjab Director General of Police Suresh Arora, who honoured her in 2018.
Jasmine had subsequently completed her postgraduate studies in politics and, according to people who knew her, was preparing for the UPSC examination.
Some accounts indicated that she had been experiencing mental distress for some time. Police are examining the circumstances and have not yet announced a final conclusion regarding what led to the incident.
