India wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan believes calmness, composure and teamwork are crucial to adapting quickly when international cricket switches between formats.
Kishan played an important role in India’s seven-wicket win over Afghanistan in the first T20I at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, scoring 42 and sharing a 121-run opening partnership with Abhishek Sharma, who smashed 82, as India chased down 157.
“As a professional, I think when it changes, we just have to adapt as soon as possible. We need to get into that zone again and again because this is not the first time we are doing this,” Kishan said in a video posted on BCCI.tv.
He acknowledged that moving between formats can take some adjustment but stressed the importance of remaining composed in the middle.
Reflecting on his partnership with Abhishek, Kishan said the two batters continuously assess the situation and adjust their roles according to who has momentum.
“I think I played an ODI innings because Abhishek was there, good in his shots, and he was playing well. I wanted Abhishek to have that momentum so that he can keep on going and not think about wickets falling from the other end,” he said.
Kishan added that the roles could easily be reversed if Abhishek was struggling for timing, making their approach a matter of teamwork and situational awareness.
The wicketkeeper-batter also highlighted the importance of preparation away from the field. He said he studies videos of opposition bowlers and discusses his game with teammates and friends to identify areas that need improvement.
For Kishan, the key is ultimately to watch the ball and play naturally rather than becoming overly focused on particular scoring areas.
“Sometimes you get in a zone where you just keep on smacking the ball and you lose your momentum or shape. But when you talk to your friends, you do know what sort of mistakes you’re making, and you just keep on improving each and every day,” he said.
With India’s schedule continuing at a hectic pace, Kishan said his immediate priority was recovery ahead of the next game on Tuesday.
“I’m just going to rest. I won’t do anything. I’ll just have a good workout session before the next game and that’s it,” he said, joking that he was “not going to leave my bed for two days” because of the fatigue.
