The BJP secured clear majorities in four of Rajasthan’s 10 municipal corporations — Jaipur, Udaipur, Bhilwara and Kota — in results declared on Monday, while the Congress won a clear majority in Bikaner.
Independent councillors are expected to play a decisive role in board formation in Pali, Ajmer, Bharatpur and Jodhpur. Congress emerged as the largest party in Pali and Ajmer, the BJP was the single-largest party in Alwar, while Jodhpur witnessed a close contest between the two major parties. Independents emerged as the largest group in Bharatpur.
Results for four wards in Jaipur and one ward in Jodhpur were withheld because of re-polling necessitated by technical problems.
Jaipur saw several notable results. Congress candidate Gazanfar Ali recorded the biggest victory in the state, defeating his rival in Ward 113 by 10,014 votes. BJP candidate and former Jaipur Mayor Jyoti Khandelwal lost from the high-profile Ward 112. Former BJP state spokesperson Vimal Katiyar also lost Ward 35 by 1,461 votes, while Congress city district president Omkar Verma was defeated in Ward 42 by 279 votes.
Twenty-one-year-old Congress candidate Saraswati Prajapat won Ward 51, while national-level football player and BJP candidate Vikas Raghwani emerged victorious from Ward 28. BJP candidate Nikita defeated former Congress Mayor Kunti Deora in Ward 99.
In Jodhpur, results for 99 of 100 wards were declared, with Congress and BJP winning 44 seats each. Independents secured 10 seats and the Rashtriya Loktantrik Party won one. With the two major parties tied, Independents are likely to determine the race for Mayor.
Following the results, Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma and State BJP president Madan Rathore celebrated with party workers at the BJP office. Rathore described the outcome as public approval of the state government’s development work and claimed the BJP had secured 90 per cent success across municipal corporations.
Sharma termed the results an endorsement of the government’s work over the past two-and-a-half years under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and dedicated the victory to the people and BJP workers.
Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, however, alleged that the BJP government was using police pressure to influence Congress and Independent councillors in Jodhpur and Alwar to secure Mayoral posts. The BJP has rejected such allegations.
Re-polling will be held at five booths in Jaipur following EVM-related technical problems. The affected booths are 111 in Ward 9, 235 in Ward 18, 343 in Ward 25, and 477 and 484 in Ward 34.
Results for 47 municipal councils and 252 municipalities were also declared, setting the stage for contests for Chairperson and President posts across Rajasthan’s urban local bodies.
