Ganesh festival celebrations turned tragic in Karnataka as at least seven people were killed in three separate road accidents in Belagavi, Kalaburagi and Mandya districts between Monday night and Tuesday morning.

In Mandya, a couple and their daughter were killed after a tanker allegedly ran over their scooter in the early hours of Tuesday. The deceased were identified as Mutturaj, his wife Kavya and their daughter Keerthana.

Mutturaj, who worked at a factory in Bengaluru’s Peenya area, had travelled with his family to his mother-in-law’s house for the Ganesh festival. The family was returning to Bengaluru when the accident occurred around 4.15 a.m.

Police said the tanker allegedly hit the scooter from behind before running over the victims. CCTV footage reportedly showed the tanker dragging the scooter for some distance after the collision. Police suspect rash and negligent driving and have launched a search for the driver, who fled the scene.

The couple’s other daughter sustained serious injuries and is undergoing treatment. The bodies were shifted to the Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences.

In Kalaburagi, one person was killed and another critically injured in an accident at the Hirapura Road Flyover while they were reportedly on their way to bring a Ganesha idol.

The deceased, identified as Prashanth Biradar, was riding a motorcycle when it came into contact with another two-wheeler. Both riders fell and suffered serious head injuries. Prashanth later died at a hospital, while the other rider remains under treatment.

In Belagavi, three people were killed when their motorcycle allegedly collided with a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus near Savadatti late Monday night.

The deceased were identified as 22-year-old Vinod Hogennavar, 20-year-old Akash and Ravi Kurubara. Police said the trio had travelled from Dharwad to watch a Ganesh procession and were returning towards Savadatti when the accident occurred.

All three died at the spot following the collision. Police in Belagavi, Kalaburagi and Mandya have launched separate investigations into the accidents.
