Gurugram Police have added an attempt-to-murder charge to the FIR in the hit-and-run case involving woman biker Sia after she and her family approached the police seeking stringent action against those allegedly involved in the incident.
Police had registered the case at Sector 56 police station after taking suo motu cognisance of a video showing a car hitting a female biker on Golf Course Road. Following a detailed investigation and analysis of CCTV footage, police invoked Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with attempt to murder and carries a punishment of up to 10 years.
Police officials said the accused car driver would be arrested soon and warned that lawlessness would not be tolerated.
The development came after Sia’s family submitted her written statement to the Station House Officer of Sector 56 police station. Police are also recording her detailed verbal statement as part of the investigation.
Sia’s family member Deepankar said they had sought the strictest possible charges, including attempt to murder, hit-and-run and harassment. He said Sia was suffering from severe muscle pain following the incident and her health had deteriorated amid the stress.
Deepankar also claimed that Sia had confirmed four people were inside the car and that she had clearly seen two of them. He said her statement would form part of the ongoing investigation.
Haryana Minister Gaurav Gautam assured that strict action would be taken against anyone found guilty, saying that even members of his own family would not be spared if found responsible.
However, Advocate Naveen Baisla, representing the family of accused Kalyan Baisla, denied the allegations and claimed the incident was an accident. He alleged that the bikers had been provoking his client and said the car lost control while attempting to move ahead before touching the bike near a U-turn.
Baisla rejected allegations of deliberate wrongdoing and said his client had instead been asking the riders to slow down. The claims are part of the defence version and will be subject to the police investigation and due process.
