In a significant political development in Punjab, retired Army officer Major Bhupinder Singh Dhillon, a cousin of late former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Chandigarh on Monday.

Dhillon was inducted into the party in the presence of Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, senior BJP leader Kewal Singh Dhillon and other party functionaries.

Welcoming Major Dhillon into the BJP, Saini said his joining would strengthen the party’s efforts in Punjab and help advance its objective of restoring the state’s economic and developmental position.

The Haryana Chief Minister also used a play on the surname Badal while referring to questions he had faced from journalists a day earlier about political developments in Punjab.

“Today is also a matter of great joy for me. Yesterday, when I attended some programs, reporters were asking me, ‘Will the Badal (cloud) showers or not?’ They were asking this question… And see today, with the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Badal will now shower intensely across Punjab! Together, we will work to take Punjab forward,” Saini said.

Referring to Major Dhillon’s relationship with the former Punjab Chief Minister, Saini said the retired Army officer had resolved to work towards strengthening Punjab through the BJP.

“I express my gratitude and welcome Major Bhupinder Singh ji Badal, who is the cousin brother of Parkash Singh Badal. They have resolved to make Punjab strong. Punjab, which used to be our number one state—to restore it to the number one state, Major Bhupinder Singh ji Badal has decided that we must strengthen the Bharatiya Janata Party,” Saini stated.

Saini also linked the induction to the BJP’s broader political and developmental pitch for Punjab, saying a stronger party under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership would help accelerate the state’s progress.

“When the Bharatiya Janata Party is strengthened under the leadership of Narendra Modi ji, Punjab will also advance with great momentum and become a developed Punjab,” he said.

The induction comes as political parties intensify organisational activity in Punjab ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
