Udaipur and the wider Mewar region are mourning the death of Rajmata Vijayraj Kumari Mewar, a member of the former Mewar royal family, who passed away late Monday at the age of 83 following a prolonged illness.
Her death has triggered an outpouring of condolences across Udaipur, Mewar and Marwar, with political leaders, social organisations and admirers from India and abroad paying tribute to her life and public service.
Remembered for her warmth, dignity and commitment to social welfare, Rajmata Vijayraj Kumari made notable contributions to education and community initiatives, particularly in Udaipur. Her passing is being seen as the end of an era for a figure closely associated with the city’s social and cultural identity.
Born into the former royal family of Kutch in Gujarat, she was the younger daughter of Maharaj Fateh Singh of Kutch and granddaughter of the Maharao of Kutch. After her marriage, she became part of the former royal family of Mewar and the wife of the late Arvind Singh Mewar. She was also the mother of Dr Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar, a social worker and educationist.
Education remained one of the defining areas of her public life. She received her early education at Franciscan Convent School in Ooty and later took an active interest in expanding educational opportunities and supporting women’s empowerment initiatives after settling in Udaipur.
Her association with Maharana Mewar Public School was particularly significant. During the 1980s, she played an important role in the institution’s development, helping shape it into a modern and disciplined centre focused on quality education. Her efforts influenced generations of students.
Her final rites were conducted at Mahasatiyaji in Ahar, the historic royal cremation ground of the Mewar family. Her funeral procession left Shambhu Niwas Palace in the City Palace complex amid the presence of citizens, dignitaries and social organisations. The last rites were performed according to traditional rituals, with a royal guard of honour.
Condolence gatherings, known as Tiye ki Baithak, will be held from September 16 to 23, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., at Shambhu Niwas Palace.
For Udaipur, Rajmata Vijayraj Kumari’s death marks the loss of a woman whose life brought together the preservation of Mewar’s traditions with a sustained commitment to education and public service.
