Bristi Mukhopadhyay, the niece of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was found hanging at her residence in Rampurhat in Birbhum district on Tuesday, with police investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.
According to police, Bristi, daughter of Mamata Banerjee’s cousin Nihar Mukhopadhyay, was found hanging on the second floor of her house in Kusumba village under Rampurhat police station on Tuesday morning.
Family members informed the police, following which officers reached the residence and recovered the body. It was sent to Rampurhat Government Medical College and Hospital for an autopsy. Police said the precise cause of death would be established after the post-mortem examination.
Bristi’s father said she had been experiencing mental health issues for around five to six years and had been receiving medical treatment.
“The girl had been suffering mental health issues for about five-six years. We used to see a doctor regularly. Today, I don’t know how all this happened. We were on the ground floor of the house at that time,” Nihar Mukhopadhyay said.
Police are examining the circumstances surrounding the death, including whether family-related issues had any connection to the incident.
Bristi’s name had earlier figured in allegations concerning irregularities in the recruitment of primary teachers and Group C employees in West Bengal government schools. Following a Calcutta High Court order, the West Bengal Central School Service Commission had published a list of appointments cancelled in connection with the recruitment controversy, with Bristi’s name appearing at serial number 608. She resigned from the job a few days after joining, citing personal reasons.
Local sources said a divorce case involving Bristi and her husband had been pending for several months. She had been married in Ayash village under Rampurhat police station and had a 12-year-old child.
Police are also examining whether the family circumstances had any bearing on her death.
Mamata Banerjee’s ancestral home is located in Chakaipur village in Rampurhat Block I, while her maternal uncle’s family resides in nearby Kusumba village. Her maternal uncle Anil Mukhopadhyay and his son Nihar Mukhopadhyay’s family live there.
The death has cast a pall of grief over the area. Police said further clarity on the circumstances and cause of death is expected after the autopsy report.
