Minor Girl Rape Case: Rahul Gandhi Questions Sleeper Bus Checks Years After Nirbhaya

New Delhi, September 1, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday questioned the enforcement of sleeper-bus checking and monitoring rules after a 16-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped inside an empty bus while travelling from Greater Noida towards Delhi.

Gandhi said the incident raised serious questions about the safety of women in the Delhi-NCR region and accountability within the Delhi and Uttar Pradesh police forces.

“Delhi NCR has become so unsafe for women that a minor girl was gang-raped for 47 kilometers in a sleeper bus – from Greater Noida to Delhi. It’s astonishing that neither the entire Delhi police nor the Noida police had the slightest inkling of it,” Gandhi said in a post on X.

He pointed out that the bus travelled through the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway, Delhi’s Ring Road and a state border without being stopped at a checkpoint. He also questioned why sleeper buses were not being adequately checked despite years having passed since the 2012 Nirbhaya case.

“Even after so many years since Nirbhaya, after so many such incidents, why are the rules for checking and monitoring such buses still not being followed?” he asked.

Gandhi alleged that the incident reflected repeated administrative failures and questioned whether authorities would be held accountable. He also asked how many more women and girls would have to suffer before corrective measures were taken.

He specifically questioned accountability within the Delhi Police under Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the Uttar Pradesh Police under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

Police said on Monday that the alleged incident took place near Pari Chowk in Greater Noida on August 4. The teenager told police that the driver and conductor of the sleeper bus sexually assaulted her and threatened to kill her if she resisted before abandoning her near Kashmere Gate in Delhi.

The accused, identified as driver Kuldeep and conductor Sandeep, were arrested from a parking area in Timarpur on the same day. Police seized the bus and sent it for forensic examination, while CCTV footage from the route was collected and is being examined to establish the sequence of events.

According to police, the teenager, a resident of Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh, had left home without informing her family after her mother reprimanded her over her studies. She was travelling to Noida Sector 63, where her cousin lives.

Police said she mistakenly got down at Pari Chowk during heavy rain and darkness. After realising that she was at the wrong location, she attempted to find another vehicle and eventually stopped the sleeper bus. There were no passengers inside at the time, police said.
