Kannauj, August 22, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
Police in Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj district have seized around 10 kg of gold, valued at nearly Rs 15 crore, from a car in the Talgram police station area and detained two men travelling in the vehicle.
According to preliminary information provided by the police, the vehicle was travelling on the Expressway when it collided with a police vehicle. Police subsequently chased the car and intercepted it.
A search of the vehicle led to the alleged recovery of 10 gold bricks from the two occupants, who were taken into custody for questioning.
Preliminary inquiries indicate that the consignment was allegedly being transported from Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh to Daryaganj in Delhi. Investigators are also examining the possibility that the gold had entered India through Nepal before being transported through Uttar Pradesh.
The police are now working to establish the exact origin and ownership of the gold, its intended recipient and whether the two detained men are connected to a larger interstate or international smuggling network.
Authorities are also examining documents and other material recovered from the vehicle as part of the probe.
Following the seizure, a GST team reached Talgram police station to examine and verify the recovered gold. A Customs Department team is also expected to join the investigation.
Officials are expected to assess the consignment’s purity, market value and supporting legal documentation. Further questioning of the two suspects is underway, while different agencies are coordinating to trace the source and intended destination of the gold.
The recovery has also prompted authorities to examine the alleged use of routes through Nepal for gold smuggling and identify any other individuals who may be linked to the consignment.
