A 14-year-old girl died while being referred for medical termination of pregnancy from Kishtwar to Doda in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday, with police arresting a school teacher allegedly linked to the case.
The incident has triggered shock and concern in the remote Kishtwar district. According to police, the minor, who belonged to the Khatroo area, was being taken to Doda for medical termination of pregnancy when she died en route.
Police registered an FIR at the concerned police station and arrested the school teacher in connection with the case.
The police said the teacher was allegedly involved in the circumstances that resulted in the minor’s pregnancy. However, the exact circumstances surrounding the pregnancy and the girl’s death are being investigated.
“Further investigation is underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the pregnancy, the girl’s death and other aspects of the case,” police said.
Officials are continuing to investigate the case, and further details are awaited.
The incident comes against the backdrop of continuing concerns over crimes against children in Jammu and Kashmir. According to data presented in the Rajya Sabha during the Monsoon Session, the Union Territory registered 887 cases of crimes against children in 2024.
Of these, 444 cases were chargesheeted, while 537 remained pending investigation at the end of the year. A total of 2,517 cases involving crimes against children were pending trial at the end of 2024, while the conviction rate stood at 9.4 per cent.
The number of registered cases stood at 920 in 2022, declined to 910 in 2023 and fell further to 887 in 2024.
In 2022, 456 cases were chargesheeted and 394 remained under investigation at the end of the year, with a conviction rate of 11.7 per cent. In 2023, 413 cases were chargesheeted, 449 remained pending investigation and the conviction rate was 8.7 per cent.
