Jadavpur University Clashes: Bengal Minister Warns of ‘Surgical Strikes’ if Anti-National Slogans Return

Kolkata, August 21, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

West Bengal Panchayat Affairs and Rural Development Minister Dilip Ghosh on Friday warned that “surgical strikes” would be carried out again at Jadavpur University if anti-national slogans were raised on the campus, amid tensions following two rounds of clashes between student groups.

Ghosh was referring to clashes involving activists of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), the student wing of the CPI(M), and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), affiliated with the RSS. The clashes took place on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday and again on Thursday evening at Jadavpur University (JU).

“The previous Trinamool Congress government had nurtured anti-national activities within the campus for years. No one dared to protest then. Our party workers tried to conduct surgical strikes against such anti-national activities within the campus earlier also,” Ghosh told reporters.

He added that such activities should immediately stop and warned that similar action would follow if anti-national movements or slogans resurfaced on the campus.

Ghosh also said the political situation in West Bengal had changed and claimed that a new BJP government in the state would not tolerate such activities at JU.

Following the clashes, the university authorities decided to constitute a probe committee to investigate the incidents that occurred inside and outside the campus. The violence also resulted in damage to the university’s engraved emblem, designed by renowned artist Nandalal Bose, a pioneer of modern Indian art and a key figure of Contextual Modernism.

JU authorities convened a meeting with stakeholders at 3 pm on Friday to discuss measures to maintain peace and order on campus. Meanwhile, several Left student organisations announced a procession within the university later in the day.

An association of JU teachers also scheduled a protest demonstration from 2 pm to 4 pm on Friday to condemn the clashes and damage to the university emblem. Current and former teachers were invited to participate.

The Calcutta University Teachers’ Association also condemned the incident, saying the sanctity of one of the country’s premier educational institutions should not be allowed to be tarnished by the actions of a few politically motivated individuals.
